Local wool producers Andrew and Liesbeth Long secured “superb” sale results recently, receiving a premium price for their wool clip earlier this month.
The Timor couple’s highest price of 2320 cents greasy was obtained for a line of wool off non mulesed one-year-old mixed sex merinos, sold through Elders at the National Wool Selling Centre in Melbourne.
Measuring 15.5 micron, 64 percent yield, 71 mm length, 44 n/kt and a very low CVH of 39.8, the line of wool was purchased by woollen mill Vitale Barberis Conanico in Italy — founded in 1663.
Elders district wool manager Craig Potter said the sale was a terrific result for the Longs.
“This is a superb result for the Long family, well deserved and for their wool to be processed with the best fabrics in the world is a great achievement,” he said.
The Longs are breeding a fine to medium wool merino obtaining high wool cuts with a nourished, stylish wool on a plain bodied sheep that does not require breech modification.
Mr Long said he was happy with the sale.
“I’m not sure if it’s good luck or good management but this particular line of wool, just three bales, hit the mark for all the parameters the buyers were looking for,” he said.
“I’ve been growing non mulesed wool for about 15 years and I’ve had one premium that I can recall once before.
“A huge amount of Australian wool goes to China, only a very small amount goes to Italy, and particularly to mills like this one that bought ours because they’re very specific in what they do. They use it for high-end suits as far as I know, we’re talking $10,000 suits.”
