A total of 18 local businesses will unite in slashing prices from 9 am to 1 pm to encourage residents to shop locally and help save big in the lead up to the festive season.

The event will also aim to raise money for the Maryborough District Health Service oncology unit, with participating retailers placing donation tins in their stores throughout the day.

Macks Fashion and Surf owner Debbie Walker said the sale is the perfect opportunity for shopaholics to grab themselves a great deal.

“Over the years we would normally have some different organisations do some promotions of shopping sprees,” she said.

“This is the first year that’s not running so we thought let’s invite the public in on a Saturday morning and offer some great discounts and perhaps get everyone interested in shopping local.

“It works both ways because the public can save some money and hopefully it will promote our businesses at the same time.

“It also encourages people to come to the town to visit — we get people from Ballarat, St Arnaud and Castlemaine who come to Maryborough to shop which then goes onto eateries and other industries in town.”

Rinaldi’s Fashion manager Linda Parry echoed Ms Walker’s sentiments and said it’s vital for residents to back local stores.

“Come and support us — it’s a good cause, everyone is feeling the pinch at the moment so if you can save a coin here or there, that’s great,” she said.

“Shopping locally provides local jobs, gives back to the community and having a strong shopping precinct is what small towns are built on.

“If we don’t support local businesses and it goes, we don’t have places to shop and then the community misses out on how we help the community.”
