Local tradesman Danny Tatchell and RSL Victoria’s Peter Merlo have been commended for their recent contribution to the Maryborough RSL branch.

The pair were awarded certificates of appreciation at the Maryborough RSL sub branch’s AGM on Monday.

The sub branch successfully received more than $40,000 as part of the Victorian Government’s Capital Works Grant Program funding in May 2023.

Maryborough RSL sub branch secretary Danny McIver said both the funding and infrastructural works were much needed by the group to improve their facilities.

“It’s taken us about 18 months to get it done, the least we could do was honour both with our appreciation,” he said.

This funding allowed repair works including internal and external painting and plumbing, and up-grades to their kitchen and bathroom.

“We needed work on the hall, mainly timber related, and we were successful in getting a grant,” Mr McIver said.

The project was managed by local plumber Danny Tatchell.

“Danny’s contribution was nothing short of amazing because we didn’t have the expertise to organise it and do the job. Danny was instrumental in the work himself but also with the people he needed onsite,” Mr McIver said.

He also appreciated Mr Merlo’s support in assisting with securing the much needed grant.

“Peter came in and helped us out, he was my back stop. If I had any problems, I’d go through Peter,” Mr McIver said.

“I was always able to ring Peter regarding the grant, any problems we had, he would fix those problems up for me.”

Mr McIver added the pair’s contribution has significantly helped to ensure the future of the sub branch.

“The future is looking bright, 12 months ago, we were looking at folding up, that worry is now gone. We are now safe for another two or three years. Hopefully we can keep the joint rolling for a little bit longer.”
