Year 10 students from Maryborough Education Centre have been out on work experience this week in order to prepare themselves for the future.

Students apply to a workplace of interest for a week of work experience in order to decide the pathways they wish to go down in their final years of high school.

Doing work experience at McPherson’s Printing, Evan Horner described the experience as getting “a glimpse of an adult job” and an “insight to the real world”.

He said he would pursue this job after high school because there is so much for him to learn there.

One student, Khoa Do, did his work experience at Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC) where he and a couple of other students worked alongside PHD students doing cancer research and experiments based off of cancer growth.

“It was awesome, I got to meet lots of cool people,” Khoa said.

“I might go down this pathway, but this experience definitely showed me what sorts of careers are available in this area.”

Another student completed his week at law firm Herring and McMillan.

Anakin Hurley said he learnt things he otherwise wouldn’t have learnt in a classroom as he observed lawyers and helped with some archiving.

He said he applied at the law firm due to an interest in law, and work experience has “only helped cultivate that”.

Jade Marson, after doing a mini class teaching prep students Indonesian, decided to do her work experience at a local kindergarten, Californian Gully. She said she found it “enjoying but tiring”, ending her week deciding she wanted a teaching career.

I am also a student doing work experience, I decided to do it with The Maryborough Advertiser because journalism is something that interests me.

It was definitely an enjoyable experience but I am still unsure on if I would take this career pathway once I am older.

I do believe that every student should do work experience, even if they are unsure on where to do it, or if they even want to do it.

Almost every student who has completed their week has narrowed down what pathway they like; it might teach you what you like and it might teach you what you don’t like, either way it is very helpful.
