Maryborough’s struggles in the Bendigo Football Netball League continued on Saturday as South Bendigo’s potent forward line clicked in a 184-point victory.
Twenty-eight goals to two after quarter time did the trick for the Bloods, including 11 in a torrid third quarter which saw them dominate.
The Magpies had mutliple changes coming into the game, with new faces such as Kayne Cox, Michael Romero, Liam Flanagan and Jack Gallaher making their first appearance for the club.
However, it was a good first quarter from Maryborough which suggested that they might not have been in too bad a shape to start with, as while they were held goalless, they were in the game by holding South Bendigo to two goals to trail by 16 points at the first change.
But South Bendigo soon got their game into gear, and kicked eight goals to a solitary behind in the second term as they had the game on their terms, leading by 67 points at the main break.
The Bloods continued on their merry way after half time as their run from transition continued to overwhelm the Magpies, and were able to put seven goals on the board in the third quarter before the Magpies kicked their first goal of the day through Josh Britten with a fine running goal.
But South Bendigo, and in particular, key forward duo Brock Harvey and Steven Stroobants, continued to be ruthless, and added four more goals for the quarter to make it a 129-point margin at the last change.
South Bendigo looked to continue maintaining the rage in the final term and kicked the first two goals, before Maryborough were able to respond through Gallaher, who kicked a good goal from a snap.
The Bloods kicked the final seven goals of the afternoon to ensure they would finish 184-point winners, with Harvey kicking 11 goals and Stroobants eight for the winners, as they had too many answers for the Magpies defence.
Tom Myers played another terrific game in the ruck as the young Magpie continued his great form, while Britten also played well. Kya Lanfranchi fought hard, while Romero, Ash Humphrey and Gallaher were all named in the best.
The tough run for Maryborough extended to their under 18s, who went down by 51 points and are still seeking their first win of the season.
The Magpies were unable to score a goal until Campbell Wood’s major in the final quarter, with Cooper Mark, Wood, Jack Skinner, Joe Lovel, Ronnie Feeney and Lachlan Bursill all in the best players.
The reserves, for a third straight game, had to forfeit.
Maryborough will now have a week off as part of the split round before reconvening in two weeks time to host Golden Square on past players’ day.
