Claiming the 400 m Women’s event was an early 40th birthday present for Natalie Kennedy.

Running as a front marker off 64 metres, Kennedy did more than enough to ensure she had her moment to savour, running a 54.65 to win from Clea Clifford and Ruby Crisp.

Kennedy also managed the feat in front of her adoring family, which she said continually drove her throughout the day.

“It feels pretty good. Was happy to get the win and for my boys to be here watching me, it’s pretty special,” she said.

“I just had a long day, running the 800 earlier, so I knew I had to go as hard as I could so the younger girls couldn’t catch me from the back.”

With a late start at 6.30 pm, Kennedy’s race management throughout the day was fairly unorthodox with her family.

“You try and rest as much as you can, but it’s always busy with the boys and the rest of the group running. That’s part of the day, you go and support them and get around them,” she said.

Kennedy has a straightforward regime for the rest of the season.

“I’ll stick with the 800 and 400s and see how we go,” she said.
