While the rainfall radar initially suggested the storm front would miss Maryborough, by around 10 pm Sunday night it was clear that was not the case, with rainfall, lightning and thunder settling in for several hours.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), approximately 24 millimetres of rain fell in Maryborough and surrounds between 9 am Sunday, February 2 and 9 am Monday, February 3.

In the same period, according to the BoM, Bet Bet received 34 mm of rain, Archdale Junction saw 35 mm of rain and further south in Clunes, some 48 mm were recorded.

Along with the rainfall came a high volume of lightning and thunder, with some Maryborough homes even losing power for around 30 minutes at the height of the storm.

A lightning strike in Adelaide Lead caused a small fire, igniting a pile of firewood at the base of a tree, with the Maryborough Fire Brigade attending the incident for over an hour.

There were also reports of trees and branches down throughout the district.

While the storm and rainfall offered some reprieve from the weekend’s oppressive heat, the BoM’s forecast for the week ahead predicts temperatures to remain in the low to mid 30s, with no rain expected.
