And while a trouble shared is a trouble halved, for the Stonemans, sharing love is multiplying it threescore.

Come Sunday, the couple will celebrate their 60th anniversary and their approach to a healthy relationship is based on another simple equation.

“We’ve had zero arguments, and a lot of trust,” Alex said.

“All of that together, plus doing what we can to make the other person happy and sharing interests, is what makes a good strong marriage.”

Another important ingredient for a long-lasting partnership is generosity.

“I think we’re very lucky and my advice to younger couples would be to not rush to criticise your partners,” Sonya said.

“Be more empathetic and respect them as a human first.

“Forgiveness is also vital.”

And you might need some of that leniency especially if your spouse is prone to forgetting important dates.

“I would encourage people to always buy flowers on anniversaries even if the other person doesn’t remember the date,” Alex said.

“Alex always remembers, and I forget but that’s the secret to a long marriage — you let things go and have a laugh together,” Sonya added.

On September 1, Sonya will wake up to a fresh bouquet of flowers from Alex, and together the pair will mark their anniversary by doing what they do best — sharing a laugh.
