Long-serving member and president of the Maryborough RSL sub branch, Steve Braunton’s dedication to the community has been recognised with a life membership.

During an award ceremony held at the sub branches hall on Tuesday afternoon, Mr Braunton, who’s been a member of the RSL since the 90s, received his award.

A member of the Australian Defence Force for 10 years, Mr Braunton saw numerous postings in Victoria and Australia more broadly and said he was shocked to be made a life member.

“I don’t do what I do for recognition like this, I’m shocked,” he said on Tuesday.

“It’s an absolute honour and a privilege to receive this, but it doesn’t belong to me — it belongs to everybody in the sub branch.

“Without their support and guidance, I wouldn’t have been able to do what I do.”

The life membership is awarded by RSL Australia and recognises Mr Braunton’s services as a member of the RSL’s Victorian branch.

Presenting him with the life membership this week, the RSL’s John Gault said Mr Braunton was a deserving recipient.

“Steve became president of the RSL sub branch through what were difficult years, we were losing members to the eternal march that ends in a long night,” he said.

“Through that time, Steve held his head high and his heart was in it every minute, every hour and every day.

“Steve is held in the utmost regard by the RSL sub branch and has been an adornment to the RSL and Vietnam Vets Association over so many years.”
