It was a day where the favourites all took convincing victories to maintain the status quo.
Newly-minted ladder leader Dunolly Blue made the strongest statement, defeating Newstead 81-33 to take top spot away from the clutches of Highland Tartan.
Gregory Dobbin took a strong 33-9 win over Rod Hamilton, while Alan Weir had the closest game of the day, defeating Brian Daly 21-15. On the third rink, Tony Galofaro defeated Rhonda O’Toole 27-9 to ensure Dunolly Blue took all 16 competition points.
Highland Tartan lost top spot on the ladder, but were still able to post a strong victory over Maryborough Golf, 77-43.
Golf looked good on the first rink, with Kort Gay defeating Greg Shay 27-21, but it was all Highland Tartan on the remaining two rinks, with Leanne Wallis defeating Michelle Harris 23-12 and Andrew Brumby taking a dominant 33-4 win over Marian Webb to blow the margin out.
Maryborough Golf’s loss was Talbot’s gain, as they moved into third position on the ladder thanks to a 79-41 win in which they took all 16 competition points.
However, it wasn’t without a fight from a much-improved Carisbrook. Ray Prentice was still too strong for Sydney Pearson, taking the first rink 19-14, while Barb Crossley took a 23-17 win over Judy Cassidy. A 37-10 win by Matt Vernon over Phillip Burt allowed Talbot to blow the margin out.
A dominant first rink victory by Adrian Masterman-Smith over Charles Spiteri gave Highland Gold a comfortable 69-45 win over Dunolly Gold.
Masterman-Smith won 36-6, while Jeanette Oliver also won 18-17 over Frank Mifsud. Dunolly Gold took two competition points when Jim Haigh defeated Dennis Prosser 22-15.
In the sixth round of competition, the highlight will be Maryborough Golf’s clash with Dunolly Blue, with two of the top four teams clashing.
Highland Gold and Avoca are well-placed to cash in if Golf cannot beat the ladder-leaders, with the two teams meeting at Highland.
One of Carisbrook or Dunolly Gold look poised to take their first win of the year when the two meet at Carisbrook, while Newstead will be looking to get back on the winners list when they host Talbot.
Highland Tartan will have the bye.
