Round five of the Saturday pennant was completed on the weekend, with the higher-ranked teams in division one taking big victories.

League leaders Dunolly Blue were able to continue their good form, completing the sweep against Avoca Red and taking a 75-45 victory.

A 35-13 victory on rink one all but assured victory from the get-go, with closer games on rink two, 18-12 and rink three, 22-20, at least helping Avoca Red preserve some percentage in their battle for a top four spot.

Highland Tartan kept pace in second spot on the ladder, likewise completing the sweep against Newstead Blue with a 73-38 win.

While Newstead White were able to be competitive on rink one, going down 17-22, it was unfortunately not the same story on rinks two and three as they continue to seek their first victory of the season, with Highland Tartan winning 28-8 and 23-13 respectively.

Talbot Gold put in an impressive performance to keep in touch with the top two, sweeping Maryborough Golf Blue with a 57-41 victory.

It was a tight affair, particularly on rinks two and three, but a 21-9 victory on rink one allowed Talbot Gold to keep command of the tie, while 19-16 and 17-16 victories on rinks two and three allowed them to take the coveted 16 premiership points.

Dunolly Gold moved into the top four thanks to a 63-54 victory over Highland Red.

A 19-13 victory on rink one gave Dunolly Gold the edge, but Highland Red bounced back on a high-scoring second rink, winning 25-22. But a 22-16 victory on rink three allowed Dunolly Gold to move into the top four at Golf Blue’s expense.

Division two was headlined by a thriller between Maryborough Golf Gold and Carisbrook, which went the way of the latter in a 60-56 victory.

Golf Gold were able to take the ascendancy with a 21-16 victory on rink one, but Carisbrook were able to bounce back on rink two with a 25-20 victory. With scores level, rink three proved pivotal, with Carisbrook winning 19-15 on rink three to maintain their hold on second place.

Their win meant they were able to keep pace with runaway ladder-leader Highland White, who extended their gap on top to 12 points thanks to a sweep against Dunolly Green, winning 73-39.

Dunolly Green put up a good fight on rinks one and two, with Highland White having to fight to win those two rinks 22-16 and 17-16, but it was rink three which allowed Highland White to build their percentage, winning 34-7.

Talbot Brown moved into third position on the ladder thanks to an important victory over Maldon, winning 63-48.

A 31-14 victory on rink one allowed Talbot Brown to assume control, before an 18-12 victory on rink two all but assured them the tie, before Maldon at least took two competition points with a 22-14 victory on rink three.

Maldon’s loss was Avoca Gold’s gain, moving into the top four courtesy of an 81-43 win over Newstead Blue.

Avoca Gold came perilously close to completing the sweep, with a draw on rink two giving Newstead Blue a point. They were able to take rink one 32-12 and rink three 31-13, but neither could be separated on rink two with an 18-18 draw the result.

There will now be a week’s bye before competition resumes next weekend.
