It’s set to be a bumper seventh season for the AFL Women’s competition, with Maryborough products among the thick of things.
For Maryborough’s Lauren Butler, season seven will represent her first in Collingwood’s leadership group, having been elevated in what is one of the most decorated leadership groups within the entire competition, joining co-captains Steph Chiocci and Brianna Davey, vice-captains Brittany Bonnici and Ruby Schleicher and Chloe Molloy.
Speaking to collingwoodfc.com.au, Magpies’ Head of Women’s Football Jess Burger said she had great confidence in the leadership group to set the standards for the team.
“We’re pleased to reward Lauren (Butler) and Chloe (Molloy) with official leadership positions this season. The pair have stepped up over recent seasons and we’re looking forward to seeing them continue to impact on and off the field in their new roles,” she said.
Butler won’t be the only product from around the area, with Trentham’s Jenna Bruton and Avoca’s Paige Scott also set to make significant impacts at their respective teams.
Bruton recently starred for North Melbourne in a practice match victory over Adelaide, while Scott, drafted with the eighth pick in the 2022 AFLW Draft, will make her debut for Essendon on Saturday night against Hawthorn, already becoming a fan favourite thanks to her flamboyant nature of play in both defence and attack.
Season seven of the AFLW begins on Thursday night when Butler’s Magpies take on Carlton at IKON Park.
