Stamps of all shapes, sizes, colours and rarity will be on show next week, as the Maryborough Stamp Club holds its annual auction.

Philatelists from right across the district will make their way to Maryborough next Tuesday for the annual event, which is an opportunity for enthusiasts and admirers to compare stamps and add to their collections.

Club president Steve Greenwood said there’s bound to be something for everyone at the auction, with around 207 lots up for grabs.

“We get people coming in from Melbourne, Bendigo, Ballarat, Warrnambool, Castlemaine and St Arnaud as well as the locals so it’s always a really good event,” he said.

“There’ll be packet lots and albums available for purchase at the auction, loose stamps, bags of stamps and even individual stamps.

“There’s a huge variety that will suit everyone and there are some places where stamp sellers actually have a story with the history of the stamp attached.

“I do know there will be stamps dating back to the 1840s and you can tell because they’ve been cut out with scissors and that’s because perforated stamps weren’t introduced until the 1850s.”

The auction had around 60 people attend last year and Mr Greenwood is hopeful of seeing a larger crowd this time around, as well as some new faces.

“We are hoping to have a few more people come along this year because last year, we still had the lingering impacts of COVID,” he said.

“The public are free to come along on the night and if they’d like to join the stamp club, please get in touch.

“The auction is a good opportunity to see what we’re all about or if you have some stamps and you don’t know much about them, we can have a look and let you know what you’ve got.

“We meet every second Tuesday in the month at 7 pm at the St Augustine’s Hall and we’d love to see some more faces there.”

Next week’s auction will take place on Tuesday, May 9 at the St Augustine’s Hall, with viewing from 5 pm and the auction, which is running on a ‘red dot’ system, to commence at 7 pm.
