A locomotive featuring paintings by St Arnaud artist Kyle Torney will be unveiled at Maryborough’s historic station this Thursday.
The artistic reveal celebrates the completion of upgrades to the Ararat-Maryborough line as part of the Murray Basin Rail Project.
Works to the line included the installation of new 47-kilogram rail along the 88-kilometre track between the two towns.
This re-railing enables all wagons to operate at a 21-tonne loading capacity, according to the Victorian Government.
The project also covered the Elmhurst Loop commissioning, which together with the Ararat-Maryborough line upgrade will reduce journey times, increase network reliability, and resilience.
Marking the conclusion of this major development, paintings by muralist Mr Torney of fruits, nuts and grains have been transferred on to decals and affixed to Pacific National locomotive G519.
Community members are invited to enjoy a free breakfast and witness the painted locomotive make its freight network debut at the Maryborough Station this Thursday July 18 at 7 am.
Broadly, the Murray Basin Rail Project will upgrade Victoria’s rail freight network to meet growing industry demand for services.
The project will drive economic growth, create jobs and ensure the future of freight in the region, removing thousands of truck trips off regional roads.
