Maryborough Soccer Club had a historic outing at Princes Park, but were unable to stop Ballarat from taking a 3-1 victory on Sunday.

An impressive contingent journeyed to Princes Park to watch the games on offer throughout the afternoon, with all four Maryborough Soccer Club teams playing at the same venue.

In the senior game, Maryborough fought hard to give themselves a chance of picking up their first victory of the season, but were unable to prevent Ballarat from going up 1-0 in the first half through Liam Haintz.

The blue and whites did have their chances, with Luke Bucknall narrowly missing a goal from close range from what was a difficult chance.

Ballarat continued to have the lion’s share of the play as the second half started, and was rewarded with a second goal to go up 2-0 through Mauricio Saldarriaga Moreno.

However, Maryborough started to get into their groove, and later on received a penalty when Cooper Stephens was hip and shouldered in the box.

Garry George stepped up and took the penalty, and slotted it into the corner to give the blue and whites some hope.

Maryborough did have their looks at goal, but it was Mikiyas Stevenson Chamings that was able to do the damage at the other end as he was able to seal the game late on as the blue and whites sought an equaliser.

Still, it was a good performance against the now-fifth placed Ballarat, even if it didn’t result in victory, and while the blue and whites now sit on the bottom of the ladder, there is still some optimism that they can compete hard with the teams around them.

The under 14 team had a very difficult task against the undefeated Ballarat Red, who had yet to concede a goal in the season, and that remained the case after Sunday’s play, as they lost 14-0.

Club president George hailed the day, and thanked the Maryborough Magpies for allowing them to use Princes Park for the afternoon.

“For them to facilitate this at a time when they have so much happening is incredibly generous and testament to the great community spirit that exists in this town,” he said.

Maryborough will have a tough task this week as they welcome top team Vikings to Jubilee Oval, with the under 14s starting at 12 pm and senior game at 2 pm.

The under nines will play at Coronation Park, with Blue playing against Daylesford and Hepburn United, and Gold up against Ballarat White.
