A very impressive Maryborough Soccer Club took the fight right up to Bacchus Marsh on Sunday before ultimately going down 3-1.

The blue and whites had some good patches throughout the afternoon, and defended incredibly stoutly.

But Bacchus Marsh were able to take enough chances to eventually come away with the three points.

The Scorpions made the better start, with a good corner kick eventually driven into the back of the net by Jonathan Siddell in the sixth minute.

But Maryborough were up for the fight, and in the 19th minute, a good move on the left-hand side wing from Tyler McSwain, as well as a goalmouth scramble, saw Julian Callea finish from close range for his second goal of the season.

It was a dogfight for 20 minutes following that goal, with Maryborough looking to hold on long enough to press for the lead. But it wasn’t to be, with a parried save from Bayden Macintyre in the 39th minute leading to Kyle Stewart restoring the lead for Bacchus Marsh.

With Maryborough sitting just one goal behind at the break, they were looking to restore order, but suffered a setback just three minutes into the second half when Macintyre conceded a penalty, which Stewart put away for his second goal of the game.

While Bacchus Marsh looked to continue on with the job in the second half, it wasn’t to be, with an impressive Maryborough defensive performance repelling most of the Scorpions’ second half chances.

Maryborough will now sit out the weekend’s action thanks to the King’s Birthday weekend, but will return in two weeks time when they host Forest at Jubilee Oval.
