An appeal to support world class care for children at The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne has launched, with Maryborough residents encouraged to get involved.

The Small Change Appeal launched at Woolworths supermarkets across Victoria last week and invites customers to support the work of the Good Friday Appeal.

Throughout October, Woolworths customers, including those here in Maryborough, will have the option to round up their shop at self-checkouts or purchase a 42 appeal token at serviced checkouts.

All of the funds this year will be donated to the Good Friday Appeal to help The Royal Children’s Hospital extend its support for child-focused therapies and, for the first time, fund their Garden Therapy Program.

This will include support for a garden therapist in a full time capacity, who will work with hospital staff to offer outdoor horticultural and sensory experiences for children staying at and visiting the hospital, helping to distract from pain, decrease stress and provide relief.

Woolworths state general manager Sarah Gooding said support from local communities is strong in supporting the appeal.

“We are extremely grateful to our customers in Maryborough for their generosity,” she said.

“We continue to see strong momentum for the Small Change Appeal from the local community each year, which has had a huge impact across the state to fund services and equipment for the Good Friday Appeal as they continue to help kids thrive.”

Good Friday Appeal executive director Rebecca Cowan said every donation makes a difference in supporting children and families.

“We are thrilled that Woolworths is expanding their support with this incredible program,” she said.

“It continues a long tradition of the Woolworths Small Change Appeal funding projects and programs that help relieve stress and anxiety for children and families during their hospital stay.

“We are very grateful to Woolworths’ team and Maryborough customers for their continued generosity.”

Woolworths has partnered with the Good Friday Appeal since 1987, hosting a number of fundraisers at the Maryborough store to support their work.

The small change donations from customers and Woolworths staff has amounted to over $27 million in funds for the charity over the last 36 years.
