A recent series of skate and scootering workshops were overwhelmingly successful, with a raft of activities throughout the shire planned for the coming months.
Young people well and truly got their skate on throughout November and December, taking part in weekly workshops at the Maryborough Skate and Scooter Park facilitated by local skating enthusiast Ed Thiele.
Those taking part in the workshops learnt the basics of where to position their feet on the board, pushing off, bending through their knees to go up and down ramps and developed plenty of confidence — as well as safely learning a variety of tricks and stunts like the strawberry milkshake.
The workshops formed part of the broader Healthy Loddon Campaspe program with a focus to improve health outcomes locally.
Central Goldfields Shire mayor Liesbeth Long said the workshops had been an overwhelming success, with sessions booked to capacity.
“The sessions booked out super-fast, showing that there is a strong want and need for these sorts of activities for our shire’s youth. Each week we’ve had around 16 local young people (ranging from 4 to 16 years old) coming along learning new skills and for others they’ve been able to take their skills to the next level,” she said.
“We are so fortunate to have a competition standard Skate and Scooter facility right here in Maryborough.”
“Big thanks to Healthy Loddon Campaspe for running the workshops so that we can see local young people, more active more often.
Central Goldfields Shire Healthy Loddon Campaspe health broker Adam Tarr said the popularity of the skate and scooter workshops had exceeded expectations with more events planned for the near future.
“Big thanks to local skating identity Ed Thiele for his support in delivering the workshops,” he said.
“The skate and scooter workshops are just one of four projects we are in the process of delivering in the Central Goldfields.
“We’re also in the process of planning cooking and gardening workshops in Dunolly, a Healthy Schools Project and a Healthy Sports Club Project. There’s lots to look forward to so watch this space.”
