Two upsets from lower ranked teams shook up the outlook of the 12th round of midweek pennant.

In particular, it was Newstead’s third victory over the season, achieved over third-placed Maryborough Golf, which proved to be a showstopping result.

Newstead’s win allowed them to move up to seventh on the ladder, clearing out from the bottom two.

The result, however, was a blow for Golf, who are now 34 points behind Dunolly Blue.

Brian Daly took care of Liz Bucknall 26-16, and David Cobden defeated Harold Patullo 27-7. While Kort Gay prevented a clean sweep with a 21-16 win over Graeme Lipback, it wasn’t enough to prevent Newstead from taking a 69-44 win.

Avoca roared back into finals contention with a 62-48 win over Talbot, which now sees them 13 points behind their opponents in fifth.

Avoca narrowly missed out on taking all three rinks, with Noel Parratt and Matt Vernon unable to be split on 18 shots apiece. But Loralee Field’s 25-16 win over Ray Prentice and Daniel Giddings’ 19-14 win over Barb Crossley allowed Avoca to control the game.

Dunolly Blue kept pace with Highland Tartan at the top of the ladder thanks to a dominant 87-44 win over Highland Gold.

Keith Elliott had the closest rink of the day with a 28-22 win over Paul Gothard, but it was all Dunolly Blue on the other two rinks, with Alan Weir taking a 31-10 win over Corry Moss and Tony Galofaro defeating Dennis Prosser 28-12.

That was countered by Highland Tartan, who also swept Carisbrook, winning 77-41.

It was a good effort from Carisbrook, who kept pace with the ladder-leaders, but they weren’t quite able to overhaul them on all three rinks. Michael Fryar defeated Helen Slater 25-15, while Andrew Brumby defeated Patricia Stancombe 29-12 and Greg Shay defeated Denise Matic 23-14 to maintain their 25-point cushion on top of the ladder.

Round 13 will be the last midweek pennant round of 2023.

Highland Tartan will be well-aware of Newstead’s capabilities, and will be out to ensure they don’t miss out on a result.

Dunolly Blue will look to keep up their pace when they host Carisbrook.

Talbot face an important game to get back on the winners list, with a match-up against sixth-placed Highland Gold. Another loss could see them drop out of the top four.

Avoca could move into the top four if they are successful in claiming a clean sheet against Dunolly Gold.

Maryborough Golf will have the bye, and will await results from elsewhere to find out whether they will start 2024 in the top four or not.
