Young people from across the shire have been getting out and about this holiday season, as part of the Central Goldfields Shire Council’s (CGSC) free summer program.

From practicing their golf swings and working on their swimming strokes to watching animated movies, the shire’s youth have been keeping themselves occupied during their time off from school.

While some of the activities, including golfing and the cinema visit are now over, those aged between 10-25 years can still participate in a swimming trip or sign along at a karaoke session.

According to councillor Gerard Murphy, initiatives like the summer program — supported by the State Government’s youth developmental FReeZA scheme — helped improve physical and mental wellbeing outcomes in young people.

“It’s always great to see kids out trying new things, meeting new friends and learning new skills instead of playing with their phones all day,” he said.

“It is so important to have these programs for young people because it’s healthy to keep connected as a community, especially after trips away over the Christmas and New Year period.”

Catering to everyone, the CGSC FReeZA coordinator Audrey Bartlett said having a range of activities was important.

“Not every young person is into sport, so we try to mix it up and get everyone involved,” she said.

“We’ve got the skate park, the pools, the golf, but what if you’re a singer, a juggler, or you just want to catch up with friends and chill at the cinema? Well, we’ve got you covered.”

Upcoming activities include a swimming pool trip to Dunolly on Thursday, January 25 — participants will be provided with a free ride to the outdoor pool depending on the temperature on the day.

On Saturday, January 27 from 4 to 6 pm, there will be a karaoke session at the Library Courtyard in Nolan Street.

Registrations are required for both these events.

There will also be Australia Day festivities — games, activities and free breakfast at the Station Domain starting from 8.30 am onwards on Friday, January 26 and no registrations are required to attend.
