Shining light on dental care

As Dental Health Week approaches, Maryborough and District Health Service (MDHS) are encouraging families across the region to take steps to keep their children’s teeth healthy.

Beginning early next month, from August 4 to 10, the national campaign will focus on helping children “reach every S-milestone” for their oral health.

These milestones focus on the key stages of a child’s oral development — such as suckling, smiling, speaking, and eventually learning how to care for their teeth independently (self-care).

MDHS is taking part in the messaging through a strong focus on prevention and practical support for local families.

MDHS’ oral health clinician Kate Berend emphasised this journey for healthy mouths doesn’t have to be challenging.

“Good oral health starts with small, daily habits,” she said.

“We’re reminding parents and caregivers to help kids brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between their teeth, eat a diet that’s low in sugar, and make regular dental visits part of their routine.”

Throughout the week, MDHS will be working with local kindergartens, schools and playgroups to promote oral health messages through story time and activity packs.

Free dental packs for children will also be available at MDHS community sites and the Dental Clinic.

MDHS also encourages parents to use this campaign as an opportunity to check in on their child’s oral health milestones.

“Whether it’s brushing baby teeth or talking to your teen about soft drink, there’s always an opportunity to reinforce good habits,” Ms Berend said.

“Dental Health Week is a great reminder that prevention really is the best medicine.”

MDHS advises families to start dental visits early, ideally by age one and to speak to an expert if they have any concerns about their child’s teeth or gums.
