Session promotes fire safety
The Maryborough Fire Brigade is hosting a Summer Fire Safety Information Session next Wednesday to empower residents with essential information ahead of a potential high fire risk period.

An annual exercise, the session provides an opportunity to hear from local brigade members on ways to ensure safety during the Fire Danger Period.
This year, the program will rely on local knowledge and information to answer residents’ questions and convey appropriate preparation tips.
“It’s really important for people in our community to come along so they can understand how to prepare their properties, where to access information if there’s a high fire danger day or if an incident is underway,” Maryborough Fire Brigade’s community safety co-ordinator Raelene Williams said.
Alongside the basics, the evening will focus on how the fire danger rating system operates.
“The system has changed only maybe two years ago so it’s necessary for people to know what those changes are,” Ms Williams said.
“When people hear or see on the news that it’s going to be an ‘extreme’ or a ‘catastrophic’ day, they need to be able to understand what that actually means and how a fire will behave on that day so they can make the right decisions.”
According to Ms Williams, next week’s session is about being proactive, while there’s still plenty of time.
“It’s all about being prepared and having a plan,” she said.
“If you’ve got all the information, then you can make the correct choices if something were to happen.
“For anyone that has elderly parents, or if you’re someone who needs assistance then this session is definitely worth attending because it’ll give you the tools to plan ahead.”
The free hour-long Summer Fire Safety Information Session will start at 6 pm, on October 23, Wednesday at Coronation Park, Park Road Maryborough.
