Senior Citz host morning tea
The Maryborough Senior Citizens Club will be hosting their next Morning Tea for Cancer this Thursday, with all money raised going to the Maryborough Oncology Centre.
Now in its eighth year, the group is raising money for Maryborough District Health Service’s (MDHS) oncology unit by organising an auction on the day along with raffles and sale tables.
Originally inspired by Cancer Council’s well known “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea” the event began to ensure funds raised would have a local impact.
Speaking about the group’s previous fundraisers, Maryborough Senior Citizens Club president Veronika Miles said while organising the event can be a challenge, the impact makes it worth it.
“It’s nice to do something for the community. Everybody has been touched by cancer and when the idea of the morning tea was brought up, the people here wanted to do it but they wanted it to stay local,” she said.
At last year’s event, over $3600 was raised, with around 100 people attending.
“I just think it’s about giving back and no matter what age you are, you can do something for the community,” Veronika said.
“People should come to support their own community. Everybody has got at least one family member or themselves that cancer has affected and if we can’t do something for somebody else, that’s a shame.”
Since its beginning, a total of between $20,000 and $30,000 has been donated to the MDHS oncology ward, leading to the addition of a wig library, blankets, chairs and other important equipment.
The Morning Tea for Cancer will take place at the Maryborough senior citizens club, on the corner of Alma and Inkerman Street on Thursday, May 1 at 10 am.
Entry is $5 and open to everybody, not just seniors.
