The 2022 home and away season has concluded for the Carisbrook Lady Redbacks, and despite both teams giving it their all, they were unable to avoid the wooden spoon in the Ballarat Football League Women’s competitions.

However, while the Lady Redbacks will be recognised as finishing in last place on the ladder during the home and away season in the five-team under 18 competition, they will be taking their place in the finals series at Eastern Oval on Sunday against Ballarat Swans — buoyed by a performance against them in round 10 which saw them almost snatch their first victory of the season.

The under 18s were outclassed by Lake Wendouree on Sunday at CE Brown Reserve, losing by 68 points. Three goals to no score in the first quarter indicated that the Lakers would be controlling the pace of play throughout the day, and another four goals to zero in the second quarter gave them a 43-point break at the main change.

Carisbrook were unable to stop the Lakers from scoring another three goals in the third quarter, with the margin at the final change sitting at 63 points.

However, their last quarter gives the Lady Redbacks a good source of optimism for their elimination final against the Swans next week, holding the Lakers to one goal, while finding the scoreboard themselves through Emme Johnson.

Best players for the Lady Redbacks in the 10.14 (74) to 1.0 (6) loss were Chelcee Whittingslow, Rhiannon Carter, Olivia Butler, Mary Fitzgibbon, Meg Johnson and Tara McBean.

Meantime, Carisbrook’s under 14 team went into the final game of the season knowing they could finish in seventh with a win, however, a skilful North Ballarat team proved too polished for the Lady Redbacks in the end, winning by 36 points.

Underlining the continued improvement of the team throughout the season, they were three goals better off than in their last meeting with the Roosters.

A two-goal to zero first quarter gave the Roosters the early advantage, yet the Lady Redbacks were making them earn their goals.

Carisbrook impressed in the second quarter. Despite not scoring themselves, they were able to hold the Roosters to just one goal for the term — their lowest scoring quarter of the day — to ensure they trailed by 20 points at half time.

The Lady Redbacks got onto the scoreboard in the third quarter, however, they were only able to yield two behinds, while the Roosters were able to add another goal, ensuring they would lead by 27 points at the final change.

North Ballarat added a further goal in the final quarter as they eventually won 5.8 (38) to 0.2 (2).

Best for the Lady Redbacks were Ella Gourley, Olivia Rogers, Eden Weaver, Harmony Rizzo, Alice Mortlock and Sienna Mark.
