Several years since their introduction, local Freemason groups have again provided their primary school scholarships to 19 schools across the district.
From Wedderburn to Clunes and Amphitheatre to Castlemaine, the $300 scholarships along with a framed certificate and letter of congratulations were presented at award and graduation events throughout December.
The scholarships are designed to help students transition to secondary education and are one example of several educational awards and bursaries provided by local lodges and Freemasons Foundation across Victoria.
The scholarships are awarded to students showing promise of making the best use of the educational opportunities available to them and assist with the costs of school uniforms, textbooks, laptops and excursions, among others.
The Freemasons Foundation of Victoria supply half the funds for these scholarships, matching locally raised funds — with the total deposited into the students’ account at their secondary school.
Providing scholarships to more schools and increasing their value is the aim for Freemasons Loddon District this year.
Presentations of the primary school scholarships followed a total $3000 in scholarships local Freemasons presented to students from Highview College and the Maryborough Education Centre (MEC) entering their VCE schooling years.
Highview’s year 10 student Olivia Kinnersley received a $2000 scholarship, while MEC’s Gemma Ford was presented with a $1000 scholarship in December.
