Last week, when Father Christmas visited Avoca Primary School, his entrance wasn’t announced by the usual jingle of sleigh bells — instead, a distinct thrumming in the air preceded an unforgettable sight: Santa Claus arriving in a helicopter.

Two Powercor choppers, carrying some very important passengers, touched down at the school’s oval on December 14, as part of an initiative led by the electricity supplier to express appreciation for the communities it provides services to.

Accompanied by his elves, Santa disembarked from the helicopter to the delight of more than 100 students, who each received special Christmas gifts and treats.

Avoca Primary School’s acting principal Tom Elliott said it was a memorable afternoon.

“The whole experience has been the talk of the town,” he said.

“People of all ages throughout the community were so excited to see the helicopters land at the school and [residents gathered to watch from outside the oval]. These events are paramount in smaller communities as they bring everyone together. It’s been such a positive thing for the whole town.

“I was so proud that [we were] chosen for this once in a lifetime experience. The excitement built all day for both, teachers and students, and as the helicopters flew overhead the whole school erupted.”

For Year 6 student Emmett, there’s no better way to kick off the festive season.

“It was an amazing experience having the helicopters landing on our oval,” he said.

“All the kids were hyped up the whole day.”
