It wasn’t an ideal day for Maryborough on Queen Elizabeth Oval, going goalless for the entire afternoon against a powerful Sandhurst team.

The Magpies were up against it for the entire day against the Dragons, who as it transpired, became the last unbeaten team for the season, moving a game clear on top of the ladder in the process.

A very young Magpies team was fielded, with under 18 players Lachlan Bursill, Tom Myers, Riley Hamilton and Liam Freeman among those to step up, while a senior debut was handed to Spencer Fithall.

Nine goals to one behind in the first quarter gave the Dragons a 58-point lead going into the first break, and this was only extended in the second quarter as they pushed the margin beyond 100 by half time, thanks to eight goals to no score in the second quarter.

Sandhurst continued to dominate in the third quarter, kicking eight goals while enjoying 16 scoring shots, while the Magpies were only able to generate one behind for their efforts.

Maryborough’s best quarter for the day was their last quarter. While Sandhurst still had 14 scoring shots, they were only able to kick six goals from them, while the Magpies had two scoring shots, but was unfortunately unable to hit the scoreboard.

Kya Lanfranchi fought hard against the tide all afternoon, while James Macer, Joel Swatton, Chris Freeman, Jake Postle and Josh Britten were also named in the best players.

The Magpies will now look to bounce back in a two-game home stand against South Bendigo and Strathfieldsaye over the next two weeks.
