New accommodation offering Ruby has put Maryborough on the national tourism map.

Tourism Australia featured Ruby in The Hot List for June, describing it as a “luxurious gem”.

It is one of just 14 places to appear in the accommodation section, with the properties selected from across Australia.

Simon Thomson and David Graham founded luxury accommodation provider Whiskey June and have since opened two properties, Ruby and Gilbert, in Maryborough. They also run the Station Café.

Elgin Road property Gilbert was their first accommodation to open in Maryborough.

Ruby, at 22 High Street, has been transformed into a luxury art deco escape and has been taking bookings since June.

Mr Thomson said he and Mr Graham were thrilled Ruby had been featured in The Hot List for June.

“It certainly exceeded our expectations. We’re delighted, it’s really great to see Maryborough being featured in such a high-end publication from Tourism Australia,” Mr Thomson said.

Ruby has been open for bookings for about four weeks.

“The first date that was available was an absolute flurry of activity for us which was really positive and for us just reiterates that there is a market for that sort of accommodation here,” Mr Thomson said.

“We’re trying to attract visitors that might not have traditionally come and stayed in Maryborough, they might have stayed in Castlemaine or Daylesford.”

The Hot List is promoted on Tourism Australia’s website and is sent as a publication to tourism providers across the country.

“We do have plans for another house,” Mr Thomson said.

“It’s very close to the station.

“We’re just interested to see what the government is going to do around short term accommodation rules because there’s been a lot of chatter about that.

“So before we move on anything else we’ll just see how that pans out.”
