Royal Park held off a furious Newstead charge in the last quarter to take a two-goal win in a thrilling game of twists and turns.

At various stages, Royal Park assumed control of the game, only to see their lead whittled back by a plucky Kangaroos outfit twice.

Nevertheless, it was an important win in terms of the early makeup of the top eight race.

The Tigers made a bright start by scoring 14 goals to six to establish an eight-goal lead at the first change.

But Newstead reeled it in throughout the second quarter, scoring 14 goals while restricting Bushy to eight goals to close the gap to two at the main break.

Royal Park took control again in the third quarter, scoring 12 goals to five to take a nine-goal lead into the final quarter.

The Kangaroos fought back hard, scoring 14 goals in the last, but Royal Park’s seven goals was enough to see them take an important victory.

Abbey Devereaux scored 30 goals, while Laura Johnston added 11 for Royal Park.

For Newstead, Verity Gartside dominated inside the goal ring, scoring 33 times for the Kangaroos.
