Maryborough Rovers put a slight dampener on Avoca’s 150th anniversary celebrations when they defeated the Bulldogs by 12 points.
Rovers jumped out of the blocks with the aid of the breeze to kick five first quarter goals and keeping the Bulldogs to just one. Jack Dawson and Mitch Whelan kicked the first two goals of the game inside four minutes, and the Bulldogs were chasing tail, and it took until late in the term until Jason Hunt slotted the first goal for the home team.
Avoca fought back in the second term when it was their turn with the breeze. It was a carbon copy of the first term but in reverse as Avoca kicked five goals to Rovers one goal. Highlight for the term was the 60-metre bomb on the run from Sean Moyle for the Bulldogs to hit the front and lead by three points at half time.
It was a tough slog in the third quarter with only three goals being scored for the term with Mitch Whelan and Liam Radlof kicking truly for Rovers and Jason Hunt snapping an amazing goal for the Bulldogs as the margin was just six points in favour of Rovers at three-quarter-time.
Avoca went into the last quarter expecting the breeze to get them over the line, but it was not to be as Rovers again outscored the Bulldogs which was a very good effort kicking against the wind, which was very exciting for the Rovers faithful, but not for the large home crowd.
Rovers’ better players were Jacob Dyer, Marshall Murray, Montgomery Reeves, David Le Poidevin, Bailey Evans and Harley Taylor-Irwin.
Avoca’s best players were Daniel Howell, Cody Lubeek, Shaun Cudmore, Paul Hofman, Byron Wynd and Cameron Antonio.
