Maryborough Rovers have boosted their chances of making an emotionally-charged finals appearance in their last season, defeating Newstead by 14 goals to move up to sixth.

A high-scoring opening term saw Rovers hit the scoreboard 16 times, while Newstead stayed in touch by scoring 12 times.

But Rovers started to shoot away in the second term, scoring 10 goals to seven to move seven goals clear at the main break.

It was a similar story in the third quarter, as Rovers scored 12 goals to 10 to increase the lead to nine goals at the final change.

Rovers’ most productive quarter offensively was their 18-goal last term, and with Newstead scoring on 13 occasions, they were able to take a comfortable win in the end.

Abbey Raven was key to Rovers’ success, scoring 41 goals, while sister Ebony added 15. For Newstead, Verity Gartside scored 30 goals, while Gina Ross scored 12.

Rovers now have a season-defining match-up with Harcourt next week, with the winner firming to make an appearance in the top eight at season’s end.
