The Pyrenees Shire Council has re-elected councillor Ron Eason as mayor for another term.

During the statutory meeting of council held on November 8, Cr Eason was nominated for his third term.

He was elected as the Avoca Ward councillor in 2012 following which he served his first term as Mayor during 2016-17, and second term in 2021-22.

Now, as mayor for the next 12 months, Cr Eason’s objective is to help the community recover from the impacts of COVID-19 and the recent floods.

“It’s been challenging watching our small rural community struggle with the changes during the pandemic, and with the floods on top of this just when we were starting to see our community come back together for events has been a real blow,” Cr Eason said.

“I am committed to continue advocating for our Shire to get the help we need to fix the damage from the floods and to start bringing events back to our small towns.”

Reflecting on his previous term and the future, Cr Eason said there were numerous challenges for the council going ahead.

“Ongoing economic recovery from the pandemic in a climate of global uncertainty, inflation and significant national debt highlights the vulnerability of small rural councils to factors beyond our control and more recently with the floods, we now have a large list of new repairs,” he said.

“The year ahead is probably not as rosy as we would like but we need to embrace the opportunities and work with our communities to ensure they are developed, and are a thriving, livable place for all. Our community must be at the centre of our efforts to improve their day to day lives.”

Alongside other councillors, Pyrenees CEO Jim Nolan welcomed the re-election of Cr Eason on Tuesday.

“I look forward to continuing to work with Cr Eason as he leads the council through the next 12 months,” Mr Nolan said.

“Cr Eason’s experience as mayor, and his knowledge and passion for the Pyrenees community means he is well prepared for the coming year.”
