The Central Goldfields Shire’s second climate rally will kick off tomorrow — featuring a jam-packed program, including an appearance by Indigenous leader, Rodney Carter.
Mr Carter, CEO of Dja Dja Wurrung Group, has been secured as the special guest speaker for the event, by the local Climate Action Stewarding Group (CASG).
A highly respected Elder with significant knowledge about sustainability and environmental issues, Mr Carter has overseen the development and publication of the Dja Dja Wurrung Climate Change Strategy 2023-2024.
The strategy emphasises the importance of DJAARA leadership in both mitigating climate change and adapting to the impacts of a changing climate.
Spokesperson for CASG, Tony Macer said Mr Carter will add a vital and important dimension to the rally.
“For tens of thousands of years our Indigenous people were successful guardians of our nation, caring for country and building incredible experience and expertise in land management,” he said.
“We are so fortunate to have Rodney speak to us at the rally — I keep pinching myself and I can’t wait to hear what he has to say and to learn from him.
“There is no doubt that partnering with our First Nations people will assist us significantly in tackling climate change, from cool burning strategies to managing water and natural resources.”
The Climate Action Rally will take place at 10 am at Phillips Gardens (behind the Senior Citizens Club) on Saturday, February 17.
“This is a family friendly event with a number of our much loved local community groups, speakers of all ages, children’s activities and Devonshire teas from the Senior Citizens Club,” Mr Macer said.
