It was a goalkicking bonanza for Harcourt at home on Saturday as Jed Rodda’s perfect 10 helped guide the Lions to an 84-point triumph over Maldon.
The Lions were in stellar form for much of the day, kicking six goals in the opening quarter to two to build a 27-point lead at the first break.
They continued on their merry way in the second term, with a further five goals to two helping the Lions move 46 points clear by the main break.
But then, Maldon, to their credit, played some pretty good football of their own in the third term, and while they faced a near-impossible task, they were up to the challenge of adding some scoreboard pressure, and did well to win the third quarter by kicking six goals.
But Harcourt maintained a 44-point cushion at the final change thanks to a further five goals of their own.
It was a Lions’ frenzy in the last term as they kicked seven goals to four behinds to help increase the margin to 14 goals, keeping the pressure on Natte Bealiba in the race for the minor premiership, while also outlining their immense power in front of goal with more or less something that resembles their best team.
Rodda’s 10-goal haul was his second for the club, taking him up to 45 for the season, and he’s well on track to move past his previous-best haul of 63 goals in 2022. However, it wasn’t just a one-man show for the Lions, as he had great support from leader Tom Walters, while Cameron Anderson continued what’s been a terrific individual season. Braydon Vaz, Patrick Gretgrix and Mark Noonan completed the best players’ list for the Lions.
Brodie Leonard-Shannon continued what’s been a good season for the Dons, and passed 50 goals for the first time in his career after a five-goal haul. Billy Miller continued his recent good form, while Noah Thompson had a good battle with Jordan Gartside in the ruck. Seb Greene, Dyllan White and Adam Robinson were also named in Maldon’s better players.
