The Carisbrook Lions Club’s annual Christmas Day lunch event has recorded its biggest crowd in two decades, with almost 300 people catered for.
Running for some 20 years, the Christmas With Us lunch is a mainstay of the club and provides a free lunch and companionship for those who would otherwise go without at Christmas.
The club provided for 280 people at this year’s event which president Jefferson Hoober said is the largest crowd he’s ever seen for Christmas.
“This was our biggest ever, last year was 200 and the year before was 220 including all our volunteers,” he said.
“We make sure that everyone gets a present each year and this year was probably the biggest we’ve had in terms of the number of kids that have been there, I reckon we had around 40 this time.
“Everything went well, we didn’t have any hiccups and everyone went home happy at the end of the day which is what it’s all about.”
Mr Hoober said 2022 was a challenging year for a lot of people and families in the community, highlighting the importance of the Christmas With Us lunch.
“There are a lot of older people out there that maybe don’t want to feel like a hindrance to their own families or they get together and say ‘hey, let’s go and do something fun together’,” he said.
“I spoke to a couple who came along, they’re staying in a motel at the minute and didn’t have much to do so came out and were just blown away by what was organised.
“There are so many people who help out on the day and every year we get more and more volunteers jumping on board to help out the next year which is great.
“Families have been struggling this year and to be able to provide some support and help them out is important.”
