Ripon remains undecided a week on from the 2022 state election — although Labor’s Martha Haylett still maintains the lead, the seat is yet to be officially called.

As of the latest polling data from the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) on Thursday, Ms Haylett has 38.5 percent of primary first preference votes (11,535 votes) while Liberal’s Louise Staley has 37 percent (11,099).

In the two candidate preferred system — which provides an early indication of election results — Ms Haylett leads 52.3 percent, ahead of Ms Staley with 47.6 percent.

The seat is one of the most marginal in the state, and Ms Staley retained it in the 2018 election by just 15 votes following a recount.

Since then, Ripon’s boundaries have changed, now incorporating outlying sections of Ballarat which are considered Labor voting areas.

Ripon residents may now have to wait a little longer to find out who will claim the seat — according to the VEC, a result in close seats will not be known until preference distributions are conducted from next Tuesday, December 6.
