Starting from Summerfield Winery located around 20 km outside of Avoca, the three courses ranging from the beginner friendly 33 km to the more advanced 100 km circles through Moonambel and Landsborough before reversing back to the winery.

The biannual event also served as a fundraiser for organisers — the Maryborough Rotary Club, with proceeds from Friday’s event going towards supporting their Books for Bubs literacy program.

According to event coordinator Brian Reed, the bike ride is more than just a fundraiser, it’s an opportunity for all people to strap on their helmets and pedal through the beautiful local countryside.

“We host the event not just to raise funds, but also create a day where people can get out and ride,” he said.

“It’s a very casual event where we get all different levels of riders and most importantly everybody enjoys themselves.

“It’s on the quiet country roads, we don’t go on any highways and when they come back, they get a free sausage and a drink or they can go into the winery and get a pizza.”

The Pyrenees Magic Tri-Distance Bike Ride is an Audax-inspired event, which means the day focuses on enjoying physical activity in an encouraging environment instead of physical competition.

“We do specify this is not a race, it’s just a ride for the enjoyment of all riders and families. We encourage all ages to come along and enjoy the day,” Reed said.

“My favourite part of it is talking to the riders when they come back, I’m normally helping cook the barbecue and when the riders come back, they always speak about how they enjoyed the ride.

“Everybody usually comes back tired, but they have enjoyed themselves.”

The Pyrenees Magic Tri-Distance Bike Ride is this Friday, September 26, starting at 9 am. Tickets start at $35, with prices varying based on circuit preference.
