Residents invited to have a crack at croquet
The Maryborough VRI Croquet Club is calling for residents to pick up a mallet and hit the greens at their Family Friendly Fun Nights.
Located next to the Maryborough Railway Station, the club is currently hosting introductory events on three consecutive Tuesdays encouraging people to give the sport a go.
With their second event starting at 5 pm tonight, secretary Peter Silver said the club has already received a positive response from the community.
“It’s open to everyone, we encourage families to participate because it’s one of the few sports that every age group and gender can play and be competitive,” he said.
“It’s a first for us to try and introduce people, we do have people come here for corporate nights who say how good it is and how they enjoy it.
“We have found that some families just love to come down with their kids and play something in the open area instead of sitting at home.”
The club has hosted similar come-and-try events recently, with the club participating in last year’s local This Girl Can and Seniors Fest programs.
Silver, who has only been playing croquet for seven years, said he is hopeful other players can fall in love with the sport for its uniqueness and flexibility like he has.
“Two attractions I find with the sport is it can be as social or competitive as you like and you don’t have to be bound to a team, you can just come along and play,” he said.
“Most people are surprised by the complexities of the game and the strategies, it’s not just hitting balls through hoops.
“It’s good exercise in the fresh air and it’s certainly for people that don’t want to play physical sports.”
The Maryborough VRI Croquet Club is hosting Family Friendly Fun Nights tonight, January 28 and Tuesday, February 4 at 32 Station Street from 5 pm.
Green fees are $3 for singles and $5 per family. Equipment is supplied and flat-soled footwear is required.
