Boat access to the Laanecoorie Reservoir has been temporarily closed due to safety risks caused by high water levels, Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) has announced.
The closure was issued this week with water storage currently above full supply level and spilling — the reservoir was at 104.31 percent capacity as of September 5.
The warning has also been issued for Hepburns Lagoon and GMW water storage services general manager Martina Cusack said there would be significant risk to anyone heading out on the water.
“We currently have a lot of water from upstream running through these storages, this creates strong currents that boaters can easily get caught up in,” she said.
“Furthermore, these currents can easily carry people over the spillways where the water can be particularly turbulent.
“The high rainfall in our region also means a lot of debris is floating downstream and into our storages. This can also be hazardous for boaters.”
Ms Cusack said GMW will review the storages daily until they return to safe boating levels.
