The 2024 AFL season started last night, and many of the region’s best footballers are ready to make their mark for the year.

Of much interest will be Newstead’s Jack Ginnivan, who has switched stripes from the black and white of Collingwood to the gold and brown of Hawthorn.

Ginnivan had a strong start to life at the Hawks in his first official outing for the club in last week’s practice match against the Western Bulldogs, kicking two goals and collecting 12 disposals in a strong performance, despite the Hawks losing by 57 points.

Maryborough’s Jake Stringer will be hoping for a big year at Essendon as they look to break a 20-year winless drought in the finals, alongside Clunes’ Nick Hind.

Stringer warmed up with 15 disposals and a goal in Essendon’s loss to Geelong in their practice match last week, while Hind had 10 disposals and a goal.

Another who’ll capture intrigue is Kai Lohmann, with the opportunity to break into a regular starting spot for the Lions, who fell desperately short of a premiership last year.

Lohmann did his chances no harm last week, collecting 16 touches and applying six tackles in the Lions’ 25-point win over Sydney in their practice match meeting.
