Regan slots 12 goals in Trentham’s win over Giants
A perfect dozen for James Regan was the exclamation point on Trentham’s final game of the home and away season, clinching the minor premiership with a 133-point win over the Maryborough Giants.
The first quarter was a reasonably competitive contest, which saw the Giants score three goals. However, the Saints had the upper hand, kicking eight goals to set up the victory as they led at quarter time by 31 points.
It was a struggle for the Giants for the remainder of the game as Trentham dominated possession through the middle of the ground.
It was James Regan who ran rampant up forward, kicking 12 goals to make his lead in the MCDFNL goal kicking ladder unassailable.
His 12 goals take him to 89 goals for the season, 16 goals ahead of Talbot’s Jarrod Stephens.
With both players having the bye in round 18, Regan will repeat as the MCDFNL leading goal kicker after winning the honour last season with 84 goals.
The Saints finished the game off strongly, holding the Giants to one behind for the final term and kicking six goals themselves.
Trentham will finish as the minor premiers and look forward to the bye next round, as they will face either Harcourt or Carisbrook in week one of the finals.
Regan was an easy choice as the Saints’ best player, joined by Taylor Ford, Thomas Fuller, Joel Cowan, Alister Ferrier and Rhys Smith.
The Giants named Jack Broad, Rhys Wagstaff, Declan Wagstaff, Ryan Howell, Sam Spink and Scott Miller as their best players, with Atticus Cullinan their only multiple goal scorer with two goals.
