Redbacks rally for one of their best quarters
The Carisbrook Lady Redbacks continue to progress in 2025, registering their best performance against premiership contenders Redan this season.
Following their 163-point loss in round three and a 135-point defeat in round 10 against the Lions, the Lady Redbacks were determined to reduce the margin even further at Western Oval.
After going through the 2024 regular season undefeated before heartbreakingly losing the grand final, Redan is hungry for a premiership in 2025, currently sitting first on the BFLW ladder.
The Lions hunted down the Lady Redbacks in the opening 20 minutes, scoring 41 unrequited points in the first quarter to build a hefty advantage.
Redan kept the pedal to the metal in the second quarter, booting another six goals to extend the margin out to 81 points at half time.
Despite being down by over 13 goals at the main break, the Lady Redbacks didn’t quit, instead producing one of their best quarters of the season to start the second half.
Emme Johnson started to dictate play in the ruck, giving more chances for the midfield, led by captain Olivia Butler, to make a difference in attack.
As a team, Carisbrook did a great job restricting Redan’s ball movement, keeping more play in their forward half.
While the extra forays inside 50 didn’t result in the Lady Redbacks hitting the scoreboard, it limited the Lions to just five points in the third quarter.
The Lady Redbacks remained competitive in the final term, but the Lions were able to break through after a quiet third quarter, kicking four fourth-quarter goals to finish on 16.18.(114) while keeping the visitors scoreless.
Repeating their unrelenting efforts against Darley last round, Tamika Loone-Grundy and Maddison Smith provided much-needed energy across the ground.
The duo was once again named among Carisbrook’s best players alongside Sarah Lynch, Johnson, Danae Every and Butler.
With the BFLW taking a week off due to the school holidays, the Lady Redbacks’ penultimate game of the regular season will take place next Sunday, hosting East Point at Carisbrook Recreation Reserve.
The Lady Redbacks were fantastic in their last meeting against the Dragons, with goals from Butler and Sherriden Byrne the highlights in their 70-point defeat.
