Redbacks prove too potent despite Giants’ fight
Carisbrook were never threatened at Hedges Oval on Saturday, smashing the Maryborough Giants by a massive 120 points in a key percentage booster to their top-four aspirations.
A 10-goal to two opening term set the pattern for the day as the Redbacks ran riot over the disappointing Giants.
Blake Matthews and Tom Gardam were inspirational for the Redbacks, setting up many forward moves for the visitors.
Tim Rinaldi finished off much of Matthews and Gardam’s superb work, kicking eight goals to bring his season total to 57 goals, good enough for third in the MCDFNL goal-kicking list and a 32-goal improvement from last season.
The 10-goal opening term shattered the Giants’ confidence, and the Redbacks demoralised the home team with a nine-goal final quarter.
The running play on the vast spaces of Hedges Oval allowed the Redbacks to run and carry and have their way with the Giants.
Credit to the home team, they managed to kick nine goals themselves, including four in the third quarter, which was a good effort against the top-four side.
The best players for Carisbrook were Matthews, Gardam, Dillon Treacy, Rinaldi, Mitchell Treacy and Nick Wright.
The Giants named Rhys Wagstaff, Sam Spink, Cody Wright, Scott Miller, Zayne Earl, and Sam Thompson as their best players.
