Maryborough Red Cross member Karen Aston said the local group will come together this weekend to take part in the organisation’s national March appeal.

“We will be collecting for Red Cross Calling, which is a tradition the Red Cross do right across Australia at this time of year,” she said.

Ms Aston said donations from this weekend’s appeal will go towards supporting local volunteers who travel for disaster and emergency relief.

“It’s particularly for emergencies, for those who volunteer their time, sometimes for weeks. It pays for the accommodation so they have a place to sleep. In a disaster, space is not plentiful,” she said.

Following the Australian Red Cross’ recent support for communities in New South Wales and Queensland affected by ex-cyclone Alfred, the Maryborough branch has already shown their support.

“We have wonderful people locally who can knit. With their help, Maryborough Red Cross has just sent 85 trauma teddies to kids who are going through awful experiences with the floods. It’s a gift of love and friendship,” Ms Aston said.

Not only will the money raised this weekend allow Maryborough Red Cross to continue this support, but will also fund local programs, and local emergency relief if needed in the future.

“It helps us fund services that we do, we have one of the kindest and hardworking groups in Victoria,” Ms Aston said.

You will find local volunteers along High Street and Nolan Street from 10 am this Saturday morning.

“You’ll be able to see a group of us out in our Red Cross t-shirts, standing with our tins. We are hoping Maryborough people will be as wonderful and giving as they always are,” Ms Aston said.

Other year-round projects by the Maryborough Red Cross include the Pillowcase Program, patient transport, Tele-Welfare checks, trauma teddies and emergency relief support.
