The Maryborough Field Naturalists Club have gained access to Pyrenees Gum seeds and are now offering the seeds to locals.
The Gum tree, also known as Eucalyptus Pyrenea, was first noticed by local botanist Kevin Rule in 1987 and was officially recognised as a species in 2004.
The Pyrenees Gum is a member of the grey gum family and only natively grows on the top of the Pyrenees Ranges above Avoca.
The tree usually grows to approximately 18 meters in height rather quickly, it also possesses light grey bark, bright green leaves and is frost resistant.
The Maryborough Field Naturalists Club, who pride themselves on building the community’s knowledge and understanding of the region’s natural history, obtained the seeds from a tree growing on a private property.
The club said the gum would be ideal for growing on large rural residential property or farms.
