A rare agreement in the martial arts world has seen the Maryborough Karate Club change locations.
For years, there have been two dedicated Karate clubs in town, one of which being the Kokoro Kai Karate club run by Sensei Peter Jackson run from 8 Gibb Place, and the other being the Maryborough Karate Club, run by Sensei Gary Oliver and Marcus Cassells, which operates out of the Guides Hall on Napier Street.
However, with Jackson retiring from teaching due to personal reasons, he hatched a plan to ensure his facility wouldn’t go to waste, and knowing that the Maryborough Karate Club needed an upgrade, he decided to offer the club to Oliver and Cassells to continue teaching out of the building that he called home.
Both Jackson and Oliver teach different styles of Karate, with Jackson passionately teaching Goju Kai Karate, and Oliver teaching Shorin Ryu Matsumura.
But club rivalries and forms of Karate were instead put aside for personal pride, with both Jackson and Oliver believing that it was worthwhile sharing their passion for Karate and ensuring that the sport continues to have a good future in Maryborough.
The hall has been repainted and signage reflecting the change of hands ready to be put up.
Oliver is also offering the chance for Jackson’s former students to continue their training in Karate at the venue.
