Just four games were played across division one and two of the weekend pennant on Saturday as the weather kept teams on their toes.
DIVISION ONE
Highland Tartan were able to get their game underway against Avoca Red, and were successful in getting a victory which helped them cut into their gap to ladder-leader Dunolly Blue with a 65-46 win.
Despite the relative closeness of the game, Tartan swept all three rinks, with Garry Coburn defeating Daniel Giddings 20-18, Greg Shay defeating Ian Proctor 24-13 and Michael Fryar defeating Graeme Orr 21-15.
Newstead Blue took a crucial win against Highland White 59-46 in a result which sees them move 24 points clear of Dunolly Gold on the bottom of the ladder.
They took two of the three rinks, with Mark Leckey defeating Paul Gothard 23-17, while Brian Daly defeated Dennis Prosser 19-11. Highland White took the middle rink by the barest of margins, with Nathan Reeves defeating David Cobden 18-17.
Dunolly Gold’s clash with Maryborough Golf Blue was called off, as was the showdown between Talbot Gold and Dunolly Blue.
DIVISION TWO
Likewise, just two games were played in division two, but one of them delivered the upset of the season so far.
Previously winless Newstead White delivered a blow to Avoca Gold’s top four chances with a 51-50 win — their first of the 2023/24 season.
It was a very tight affair on all three rinks, with three different results. Loralee Field gave Avoca two points with a 15-14 win over Bernie Gervasoni, while Allyson Hearnden and Graeme Lipback couldn’t be separated, finishing deadlocked on 18. But it was Stuart Cochrane’s 19-17 win over Gordon Marr which gave Newstead White the points.
Highland Red were able to extend their lead on top of the ladder to 16 points courtesy of a 53-51 win over Maldon.
Albert Spencer took a 20-18 win over Peter Sedgwick, but Maldon hit back on rink two with Eric Cook’s 18-11 win over Tilleke Wadeson. But Alan Muggridge gave Highland Red the points thanks to a 22-15 win over Annette Gillham.
Carisbrook’s clash with Dunolly Green was washed out, as was Maryborough Golf Gold’s clash with Talbot Brown.
ROUND NINE
In the second last round of competition before the season breaks for Christmas, there are a number of important games scheduled.
In division one, Highland White will be out to bounce back from their loss when they host Dunolly Blue.
Maryborough Golf Blue will be looking to keep their finals chances intact, but will have to get through third-placed Talbot Gold at the Maryborough Golf Club.
Highland Tartan will be heavily favoured to take the points against bottom team Dunolly Gold, while Avoca Red will be out to bounce back when they travel to Newstead Blue.
In division two, remarkably, it will be first against second, third against fourth, fifth against sixth and seventh against eighth in a quirk of the fixture.
Highland Red will travel to Talbot Brown in a meeting between the top two teams, while Carisbrook will do battle with Maryborough Golf Gold.
Avoca Gold and Maldon will look to keep their finals chances alive when they meet at Maldon, while Newstead White, fresh off their first win of the year, will hope to keep their good form going when they play Dunolly Green.
