In the coming weeks, the Maryborough Field Naturalists will join the Maryborough Midlands Historical Society and the Carisbrook Historical Society for a walk along the rail track between the two towns.
The event, which is a guided walk, will feature participants of all ages and backgrounds as they explore a section of the 55-kilometre Castlemaine Maryborough Rail Trail (CMRT).
“This trail will allow people to engage with our natural environment, from the box-ironbark forests around Maryborough to the Moolort Plains which sit upon a vast ancient lava flow,” Maryborough Field Naturalists president John Higgins said.
Passing through the historic Dja Dja Warrung country, the upcoming walk will showcase some of the area’s history, both recent and ancient — with various experts from local environmental and cultural groups also expected to share their stories.
When the trail is fully operational, preliminary estimates point to a major economic boom for Maryborough and Castlemaine, with a projected increase in tourism of 24 percent in Central Goldfields Shire and nine percent in Mount Alexander Shire.
The Walking the Past, Glimpsing the Future event will kick off at 10 am on March 24 and the Carisbrook Lions Club are set to cater for all hungry and thirsty walkers.
Places are limited to 100 and people are encouraged to book their spot by visiting www.cmrailtrail.org.au
The walk begins at Dellavedova’s Fertilisers at Burns Sreet Maryborough — attendees are encouraged to bring water, a hat and a sturdy pair of walking shoes.
