R U OK? convoy visits MDHS
In a powerful reminder of the importance of connection, the R U OK? Conversation Convoy rolled into the Maryborough District Health Service’s (MDHS) Avoca Residential Community and Maryborough campus last week.
The convoy travels across Australia, promoting vital conversations about mental health and encouraging individuals to check in on each other.
Since September, the R U OK? Conversation Convoy has journeyed through nearly 50 regional towns, starting from New South Wales and making its way to Canberra, via Tasmania and regional Victoria.
During the local visits, MDHS’ residential community residents and staff had the opportunity to engage with R U OK? ambassadors Garry and Shirley Semmens.
The Semmens are a retired couple with a background in social work who shared their lived experiences over a barbecue lunch and a cuppa.
“It’s crucial to remember that a simple ‘R U OK?’ can spark life-changing conversations,” Garry said.
“We’re here to empower individuals to reach out and check in on each other.”
Shirley also shared her insights working in the community.
“We all play a part in creating a supportive community. By sharing our stories, we can inspire others to seek help and be there for one another,” she said.
Attendees had the chance to engage in meaningful conversations and hear firsthand accounts of resilience and recovery.
“Events like these remind us that mental health matters, and it’s okay to talk about it,” MDHS deputy CEO David Edwards said.
“We’re committed to fostering a culture of care and support within our community.”
