Maryborough cruised to its first victory of the 2024 AFL Masters Country Victoria football season defeating league newcomer Macorna by 11 goals on Sunday.
The Pumas powered away from the undermanned Tigers with 10 second half goals, on the way to a 16.8 (104) to 5.6 (36) win at Princes Park.
With eight individual goal kickers, Maryborough shared the spoils in what Pumas’ coach Terry Hillier described as a solid team effort.
“It was one of the most complete performances we’ve had. It was hard to pick out individual best players,” he said.
“We know Macorna had quite a few out injured from their first match, but it was still one of our best games at our Princes Park fortress.”
It was an even start, with the Pumas holding a five-point edge at quarter time thanks to some uncharacteristically accurate kicking from the home team.
The margin at the main change had stretched out to 16 points, as Maryborough began to take advantage of Jack Mills’ powerful centre clearance work.
The third term saw the home team outscore the visitors four goals to one, before running away with the match in the final quarter.
Full back Gav McGrath — switched forward late in the game — put the icing on the cake for the Pumas with a drop-kick super goal (worth 12 points) from 30m.
Other goal scorers for Maryborough were Patrick Clancy (three), Chris Cudia (three), Brad Fraser (three), Jibb Iglesias (two), Jackson Fitzpatrick, Trev Chapman and Dylan Davies.
Jack Mills and Brett Forti were named the Pumas’ best by the respective club coaches, while Fraser, Clancy, Ivan Dos Reis, Iglesias and Chris Gunn were also busy for the red-and-blues.
Maryborough’s next match is an away encounter with Woodend-Hesket on May 18.
